Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
