Ex- FBI chief James the former director has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to congressional representatives and obstructing a lawmaking procedure.

The former director's attorney entered the response representing him in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.

The defense lawyer declared he would try to have the legal matter terminated for various reasons including that his defendant, a opponent of President Donald Trump, was being targeted.

Mr Comey was charged soon after the former president pushed his top legal official to proceed against him.

Legal Proceedings

At the proceedings on Wednesday, his attorney Patrick Fitzgerald advised the judge they intended to file several legal requests to terminate the legal matter before a trial, claiming the prosecution was vindictive and that a federal prosecutor was improperly appointed to take over the proceedings.

Mr Comey's proceedings was initially managed by Erik Siebert, who left his position under influence from Donald Trump after his investigation into another rival - NY AG Letitia James - did not succeed to initiate prosecution.

Judicial Environment

The former director came across in good spirits as he walked into the court on Wednesday, chatting with his attorneys and making jokes. He was accompanied by his partner, Mrs Failor and daughter Maureen Comey, a US lawyer who the Trump administration dismissed.

Upon hearing to the court recite his legal protections and the dual charges against him in the courtroom on mid-week, Mr Comey was questioned if he grasped the allegations.

"Yes your honour. Thank you," he informed the judge.

Previous Events

The former director was the FBI Director from four years and was dismissed about four months into Donald Trump's first administration as president. At the moment, Mr Comey was directing an probe into Russian election interference and whether there were any links between the Russian government and the presidential campaign.

During his tenure, the director caused a counter-response from liberal politicians when he declared just immediately preceding the 2016 election that he was investigating Democratic candidate the candidate's use of a personal email system. Charges against the candidate were not filed, resulting in criticism from Republicans as well.

Ongoing Accusations

The federal government allege Mr Comey provided false information to the legislature during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in September 2020 when he was being examined about both the previous examination as well as the election interference investigation. They claim he deceived the Senate by claiming he had not permitted an individual at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to disclose to journalistic entities information about the agency probes.

Government lawyers also allege Mr Comey of "improperly attempting to affect, obstruct and slow" the panel by giving misleading testimony to it.

Public Statements

In a video James Comey published to his online platform after he was indicted, he stated he was innocent and accused the former president of behaving like a "autocrat".

"My family and I have been aware for considerable time that there are ramifications to standing up to Mr Trump," he stated. "We choose not to live on our knees."
"I am not guilty," he continued. "Therefore proceed with a legal proceeding."

The charges against the former director emerged after Donald Trump posted on digital channels calling for his attorney general, Ms Bondi, take legal action against Mr Comey and others.
